Vice President Biden said with a new moonshot, America can cure cancer.
— President Barack Obama, January 12, 2016

“Last year, Vice President Biden said that with a new moonshot, America can cure cancer. Last month, he worked with this Congress to give scientists at the National Institutes of Health the strongest resources they've had in over a decade. Tonight, I'm announcing a new national effort to get it done. And because he's gone to the mat for all of us, on so many issues over the past forty years, I'm putting Joe in charge of Mission Control. For the loved ones we've all lost, for the family we can still save, let's make America the country that cures cancer once and for all.”

Goals of the 21st Century Cure Act

  1. To accelerate scientific discoveries in Cancer

  2. Foster greater collaboration in research

  3. Improve the sharing of data

Let’s add a fourth:

4: A complete expectation for fast tracking research to find a cure regardless of the cost and efforts needed.

The big spend fallacy of the Cancer Moonshot

$1.8 million to be spent over seven years only amounts to an increase in spending to find cures of just 4.2% each year.

NCI Grant Money

Over 60% of the NCI grant money is handed out to universities to fund labs for Cancer research.

The NCI gave over 14,000 grants in 2018

How has the Cancer Moonshot affected Cancer?

2015: 589,000 deaths from Cancer

2021: 610,000 deaths from Cancer

The NCI is a sub agency of the National Institutes of Health (NIH)

The NIH was also a recipient of funding from the 21st Century Cures Act.

The NIH received 1 billion dollars to slow opioid abuse. Deaths are predicted to have doubled by the end of 2021.
